Hey guys. Sorry this isn't a proper journal or update, but I just posted this review to tumblr, and I wanted to put it here as well
So I finally saw Tree of Life last night.
It was probably one of the most unique, engrossing movie-going experiences of my life.
I definitely see why the film is getting such polarizing reactions. It conforms to no genre I can think of. It's abstract. surreal, and monumental, while at the same time being close, emotional, and very human.
I can't really describe it. It does exactly what movies were made to do: show you what can't be expressed in words, give you an experience for your senses and your soul. The cinematography was breathtakingly, heartbreakingly beautiful. The music in the film resonated right to my core.
Of course, everyone's experience is different. There are people who hated this film. Every showing I know about mentions people walking out, but I'm pretty sure those are the people who don't know anything about the film or director, just go, "oh look, a movie with Sean Penn and Brad Pitt." At least for me, this film, like all of Malick's films, is something you have to mentally prepare for beforehand, like taking a breath before going underwater. It's not a typical narrative, and it doesn't follow the typical arc that formulaic movie making churns these days. To me, it played out more like chapters in a book, or acts in a play, or movements in a symphony. When it finished, no one moved in the theater, and no one made a sound until the main credits had finished. It was like coming out of a lucid dream.
If you do decide to see it, I'll pass along the advice a teacher gave me: see it on the biggest screen possible.
For the curious, here's the trailer:
